Lawless Kyokai Arc
After Wané gathers a variety of insects, mushrooms, and plants for the group to eat - only for the others to refuse - Takuya steps in to inspect the ingredients. Determined to make use of them, he decides to properly prepare and cook the foraged items. As he examines the insects, he notices their muscular texture and raw odor but concludes they are still usable. He peels the skin off the bug meat, pouring it thoroughly with hot water to eliminate the smell. Moving on to the herbs, he selects the best ones and finishes the dish with a soy sauce, a precious commodity in their current situation.
When the meal is ready, Takuya presents it to the others, who gaze at the freshly cooked food in amazement. Mika praises the flavor, while Wané marvels at how the fury maggots could taste so delicious, eagerly asking Takuya what he did. Muun devours the meal and immediately asks for more, and Cartel commends Takuya's skill, calling his work impressive. Slightly embarrassed by their reactions, Takuya feels a sense of pride that his passion for cooking proved useful.
Out of the blue, Wané brings a dead glower mouse, asking if he can cook it as well. Takuya hesitates, explaining that it depends on how fresh the mouse is. Before he can inspect it further, Masayoshi intervenes, firmly instructing Wané to dispose of it immediately. This turns out to be the right call, as a brown bear appears shortly after to reclaim the carcass before wandering off. Watching the bear leave, Takuya remarks on how narrowly they avoided danger.[7]
Later, Takuya notes Masayoshi's absence after Thear loudly expresses concern about not hearing from Zaybi and the group who went to rescue the mage from Kyokai. When Muun brings up the possibility that the others may be dead and they should prepare for a potential raid from the Lawless, Takuya reminds everyone about the Titans the Lawless control, warning that it's too reckless to even consider fighting them.[8]
When Heidi offers to sacrifice herself to buy time for the others to escape, a worried Takuya asks what will happen to her. She responds that if this is what her life as a Neo-Terran is worth, she will gladly give it up and that it's her own choice. Alarmed, Takuya yells that he won't let her treat her life so carelessly because it's worth more than that.[9]
Soon, Iglay bursts in and hurriedly warns them that the Lawless are already on the roof, trying to sneak in. She instructs them to run or hide, which causes the other refugees to panic. Takuya shouts at them to be quiet and calm down, arguing that the bandits don't realize they have been discovered yet. He orders them to hide the injured and elderly in the shadows while anyone able should help. He then directs them to leave the building in turns, prioritizing women and children. Stressed, Takuya thinks of Masayoshi and what to do next.[10] In the nick of time, many manage to escape outside and hide in the nearby ruins.[11]
Once the Lawless realize they can't find anyone inside, Gisangi fires his Soul Container weapon at one of the ruins, causing destruction and shocking Takuya and the others. Deciding they don't have time to stall, Takuya takes matters into his own hands and runs towards the base to confront Gisangi. The bandit spots him and threaten him, ordering him to call over the others if he doesn't want to die. Takuya refuses, pointing out that given the small size of Gisangi's group and the timing, it's obvious he is acting without his boss's orders. He asks for confirmation, which Gisangi angrily gives. Shaking but resolute, Takuya argues that insubordination is an offense in any organization and that if Gisangi's boss finds out he tried to pillage without permission, he will lose his position. He warns that their raid failed the moment the refugees bought themselves extra time and tells them to leave now so their boss never finds out.
But Gisangi snaps, yelling that he doesn't give a damn and pointing his Soul Container pistol at Takuya, saying he acts first and thinks later. Takuya braces for the shot, but before Gisangi can fire, something suddenly pulls him inside the building. A chaotic fight breaks out, with the Lawless yelling until there is an eerie silence. Confused, Takuya decides to go check it out and tells the others to stay hidden since it could be a trap. Ignoring Thear's attempts to stop him, he runs inside, thinking he has to do what is right.
He reflects that even when humanity is driven to the brink, they must not lose the goodness in their hearts - that it's what makes them human - and that the world would go dark without kindness or love. He also resolves that no matter what happens, he won't betray what he believes is right, as taught by his father. Takuya carefully approaches the room occupied by the Lawless, trembling with fear but determined, knowing someone has to find out what happened if they want to survive. Peeking inside, he finds the Lawless slaughtered, with Heidi crouching beside Gisangi's body, holding the Soul Container weapon.
Heidi notices him and thinks how illogical it was for him to charge in during such an uncertain situation. Takuya, confused, asks what she is doing there and whether she killed the Lawless. Heidi warns him not to come closer and claims one of the Lawless turned into a parasite and killed the others before escaping. She also warns that he could get infected if he touches their blood. Takuya pauses but then asks why she is messing around with one of the bodies if she knows it's dangerous. Dropping her polite act, Heidi coldly tells him she doesn't want trouble and that is why she is warning him to keep their stories straight. Shocked to realize she is a Neo-Human, Takuya is speechless.
Soon, other refugees arrive. Takuya quickly notices them and warns Mika and the others not to come closer, saying especially Mika shouldn't see the room. He then calls Thear and Muun to come see what happened. Muun asks what Heidi is doing there, and she claims the Lawless took her hostage. Takuya decides to back up her story, telling the others that one of the bandits was a parasite host who killed the others before escaping. The others accept this explanation and begin following the Parasitica people's instructions to safely dispose of the bodies. Meanwhile, Takuya, ashamed and guilty for lying to protect Heidi, stays silent while she quietly praises him for deciding to play along.[12]
